Frequently Asked PIM Questions
This article answers the most common questions customers have when getting started with Proton PIM and using it day to day.
Getting Started
What information do I need to begin enriching products?
You can start with as little as a Product ID and a product description. Providing additional information—such as brand, manufacturer part number, category, or images—can improve enrichment accuracy, but it’s not required.
Should I upload a single product or a CSV file?
If you’re exploring Proton PIM or testing workflows, adding a few products individually is a great place to start. For larger catalogs or updates, bulk CSV uploads are the fastest and most efficient option.
What happens if I upload the same CSV more than once?
During upload, you can choose whether to:
-
Re-enrich existing products, or
-
Skip products that already exist in your catalog
This gives you control over whether you’re refreshing data or only adding new products.
Enrichment
How does enrichment work?
After products are added, Proton PIM gathers information from trusted sources and generates standardized product data. This can include names, descriptions, specifications, manufacturer details, category suggestions, and more.
How long does enrichment take?
Most enrichments complete within minutes. Larger uploads or more complex products may take longer, but enrichment runs in parallel to process data efficiently. Progress can be tracked from the Jobs page.
Why are some specifications missing or incomplete?
Some products have limited or inconsistent public information. When reliable data isn’t available—or sources conflict—Proton PIM prioritizes accuracy and may leave certain fields blank. You can manually add missing details during review if you have internal sources.
Reviewing Products
Why do enriched products need to be reviewed?
Review ensures accuracy before product data is finalized and shared downstream. It gives your team the opportunity to confirm product matching and make corrections before approval.
How do I confirm an enriched product is correct?
Key identifiers like manufacturer part number and core technical specifications are the best place to start. Source references, when available, can help with verification.
Can I edit enriched data before approving it?
Yes. All enriched fields can be edited during review. Changes are saved and tracked.
Catalog & Attributes
Where do products go after I approve them?
Approved products are added to your Catalog, which serves as your system of record for finalized product data.
Why do different products have different attributes?
Not all products share the same specifications. Attributes vary based on product type, available data, and catalog configuration.
Troubleshooting
My CSV upload completed, but I don’t see new products. What happened?
This usually means the uploaded Product IDs already exist in your catalog and overwrite was disabled. In this case, products are skipped rather than reprocessed.
The system enriched the wrong product. How can I improve accuracy?
Including clearer identifiers—such as brand, part number, or more detailed descriptions—significantly improves enrichment accuracy in future uploads.
Why does the Review Queue feel overwhelming?
For large uploads, reviewing everything at once can be challenging. Use filters or search to focus on smaller batches by brand, category, or upload group.
